I was really up for it and really on a roll…you know, go team, go. I thought I was making headway, and that my invigorating and stimulating words were actually encouraging them to be creative and find new and better ways to work that would help our company grow. I said things like, “think big and outside the box.” It felt great.

My enthusiasm, however, was short lived. A day or so later I was talking with one of our press operators and asked him if he had given any thought to what he might be able to do to help our company grow and be more productive.

Well, knock me over with a feather. All of my own enthusiasm, lofty goals and peppy clichés had totally missed the mark.

He said, “What do you mean? I run a press. I don’t mess with sales or advertising. (shoulder shrug) there’s nothing I can do.”  I started to walk away without saying out loud the words buzzing in my brain. “WHAT DID YOU THINK I WAS SAYING? THIS IS ABOUT ALL OF US.”

(Calm down. Give it another try.) So I went back and asked him, “Aren’t there times when you could run two jobs on the same plate”? “Sure, he said, I can do that.”  “Well, could you catch an error on the plate before the job runs?”  “Yep”  “Then, do you think there are times when you could make a paper suggestion to save the client some money”? Answer? Affirmative.

I could tell by his expression, the light bulb went on. I parted with, “Remember, when the company grows because you are efficient and provide excellent customer service, you’ll grow, too.

Lesson learned. As the boss your enthusiasm is not only important, it’s essential. But clearly explain how your staff can make a contribution to your company’s growth and foster team work.

That’s leadership. Not cheerleading.
